The Safety First Approach To Guns

by Carl Newton on July 6, 2010

Have you ever seen something get shot with a gun? Not in the movie theater or on the television, but right in front of your face? If you have ever hunted you have, and it is not like the movies at all, is it? It is brutal and bloody and nasty. Guns make a mess when they hit.

In the real world the one thing that guns do is kill living creatures dead. That is why policemen carry them, so they can kill bad guys. That is why soldiers have them, in order to kill enemies. That is why hunters use them, so they can kill animals that are bigger than they are for meat.

If you are going to arm yourself for any reason whatsoever, this is what you have got to get into your head. You will be able to kill. Any other person who gets a hold of that weapon of yours can kill with it, too. They can find yours and kill you with it. This is heady knowledge to have, so you must protect yourself.

You must begin and end with safety in all things concerned with your firearm. This will be clearly stressed from the moment you began shopping for one. Licensed and qualified arms dealers will strongly advise you to take a safety course, and in some areas it will be required. Do not even hesitate to do so; your life may depend upon it.

When you bring the thing home, your priority must be where to keep it from others getting to it. A quality gun safe is your best bet, along with a trigger lock. These devices are sometimes cumbersome and may be hard to open if you are in a hurry, but the purpose of this is so that nobody else can open it before you can.

Once you hide it properly, do not forget it and then think it is going to help you out when you pull it out. Old weapons and old ammunition do not work very well sometimes. Neither do out of practice shooters. Use the piece on occasion, in order to keep both of you in practice and in decent shape in case of necessity.

If you ever get into a situation where you truly need to use your weapon, you will be very glad that you took the care that you did. Guns are powerful tools to keep at hand, but like all powerful tools they need tremendous care. So show you care by always practicing safety first in all things you do with them.
