Leupold’s scopes have won a great reputation for themselves through optical quality, ruggedness and design innovation. Leupold also make some of the best scope mounting systems in the business, relied upon by the US Military and law enforcement organizations. They give you the choice of mounting semi-permanently or utlizing a rugged and reliable quick release system.
The Leupold PRW rings are their standard duty military specification rings intended for non-quick attachment of small to medium scopes. The ring clamps down with four 8-40 Torx screws which are positioned well beyond the semi-circle. This prevents the scope from rotating as you tighten the clamping screws. Larger Torx
screws clamp the mount to the rail or bases and a rectanglular cross bar prevents any movement fore and aft under recoil. The width of the clamping rings ensure the scope will not move in them if correctly torqued. The PRW rings are CNC machined from billet of steel for the greatest strength and precision, then given a matte black powder coating. Gloss black is also an option on the 1″ medium model.
The Leupold QRW rings are the quick detach versions of the PRWs. A quick release lever replaces each pair of Torx screws. This allows the scope to be removed and replaced whilst retaining almost perfect zero. The scope can be stored seperately and completely avoids the danger from cleaning fluids getting on the lenses. The Leupold QRW levers can be adjusted so that those on both mounts are at the same angle when the scope is attached to the rifle.
Military snipers use large, heavy scopes and heavy recoiling rifles of up to 0.50 BMG caliber. An entire mission can result in one shot being fired, so it is vital that that shot finds its mark. The Leupold Mark 4 rings were designed without compromise to meet these requirements. CNC machined from 11L17 steel bar stock for ultimate strength, the massively engineered rings clamp down with four Torx screws using the wrench supplied. Large hex nuts are used to secure the ring to the rail making torquing easy. The current trend toward dismounted operations has driven down the weight of military equipment and lead to Leupold creating aluminum Mark 4 mounts. 7075 T-651 aluminum is twice as strong as 6000 series and means that little strength has been sacrificed for lighter weight.
